Benno Rutz

Benno Rutz is born in Widhaus (Saint Gallo Canton, Switzerland) on 14.4.1870 and dies in Falzes (Northern Adige) on 30.6.1939. In 1889 he enters in the episcopal seminary St. Lucius in Chur (Grigioni Canton, Switzerland) and in 1893 he was ordered priest. Besides the theological studies, he spends his time studying  sacred music in Regensburg and Saint Gallo. He spends some years as  chaplain in Henau (Switzerland), and during these years he goes some times in Italy. In 1901 he enters in the Abbey of Canonical Regular of S.  Augustin, in 1902 becomes Regenschori (not translatable word: we suppose it is about the director of the chorus), in 1906 he expresses his  solemn profession, that is the last step  to the priesthood. Besides the cure of the spirits (from 1934 he is parish priest of Falzes) he has during all his life  musical interests, as composer, teaching and choir-master and he measures himself also with  historian. As composer he distinguishes himself particularly with  works of sacred music, in which he prefers a simple and popular style, in compliance with that  of the school of Regensburg. About his  beyond 100 compositions, that  represent essentially the musical kind of the epoch , only  few have been published (some songs to Maria, songs for processions for breaths, 2 vespers). His  most famous work  is a patriotic singspiel (not translatable word)  "Die Österreichs Pearls" (the  Austrian Pearl) setting to music to  the text of F. Prast, that  was sung  the first time in Novacella in 1905 and that had  a great circulation  locally.
